More Info We Are Halsted: A variety show benefiting youth homeless shelters

Comedy, Music, Dance and Auction Prizes

There are more than 15,000 + homeless and unaccompanied youth living in Chicago, and according to theNational Gay and Lesbian Task Force, more than 20% identify as LGBTQ. It may come as a surprise to many that with so many youth facing these challenges there are only 189 shelter beds specifically provided for youth across the… entire city.

This past year The Crib opened in Lakeview providing new beds for youth on the North Side, joining other Chicago organizations like Teen Living and Casa Norte in providing necessary services for our city’s homeless youth.

We Are Halsted is a one-time special event created to bring our community together, to raise awareness about the challenges LGBTQ homeless youth face and to help support organizations doing such good work.

We Are Halsted is presented and hosted by Adam Guerino (Queer Comedy at Zanies, Laugh Track at Sidetrack) with LSIC (Lakeview Safety and Inclusion Coalition—a group of residents, business owners, street-based young adults, service providers, and clergy convened by the Center on Halsted.) The variety show will feature music by gender bending belter Vallerie Dolls (Night of 100 Drag Queens,) Manny Capozzi and Kyle Greer (Fatally Cool,) stand-up comedy by Gwen La Roka (Zanies) Nyle Fisher (Laugh Track) and Ever Mainard (Dates With Ever,) dance by Jerri Blank (Strangers with Candy) and hula hoop spectacle by circus-burlesque performer Dizzy Lizzy Delicious (El Circo Cheapo, Variatease.)

Patrick Gill (All The Writers I Know) will help Lakeview residents and homeless youth write their first-hand experiences of community issues and sources of misunderstanding. The intention is that each comment will be tactful, respectful and thoughtful leaving everyone better understanding one another and possibly seeing each other for the first time. Audience members will feel empowered to be able to put energy into the community without spending more than they can afford while learning about residents that they may not normally encounter.

Donations for auction are still being taken but already include tickets to Broadway In Chicago, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Zanies Comedy Club, VIP Lakefront Speedboat tours and special gifts from Pastoral Artisan Wine, Cheese and Bread.

We Are Halsted was created for everyone as a sensational, fabulous and affordable variety show. With $5 tickets, volunteer performers, auction items and inexpensive donated beverages, We Are Halsted is a grass-roots fundraiser and a way for everyone to support our community’s homeless youth.

Interview with Lady Bits! Complete with typos from my phone!!

Spotlight on Ever Mainard

Performing Monday, August 15th

(stand-up)

How did you get started with stand-up, sketch, improv, etc? Where have you trained, performed? I have always been the class ‘town. my parents used to let me stay. up late to watch mad tv or snl. i loved watching anything with carol burnett. So when I turned 21 I moved to Chicago to study at io and second city. I had been doing some stand up and improv out on Austin. But when you’re 18 there isn’t a lot of world experience to be had. So needless to say I was the BEST stand up. i have performed all over Chicago. My phone autotyped China. I Wish i performed all over China. We’re taking aboit the female wrestler right? I am. I have my own room called the shit show that I host every monday night with my cohost Rasa. I am a member of the Chicago underground, I have performed at Lincoln lodge, zanies, the comedy store(la) flappers(la) and a bar in Madison. I do improv with Strange Soldier. It’s just me and Jack Thurston Farrell. I have my own video cast called dates with ever, and that has been tons of fun.

Do you have a day job, or is performance your primary focus?

I work at Starbucks. I always want to die when I work. Starbucks is where you work if you want to loose your soul.

Who is your favorite improviser? / Who do you look up to as a comic? I love Beth Stelling and I could always watch her set. I also love the Puterbaugh sisters. Entertaining Julia is one of my favorite shows.

Do you ever get nervous? I get nervous. every. now and then just like any one else. but I love what i am doing and I love that I am actively pursuing my dream. The only time I ever get nervous is when the yelp critic jungle bogie jay is in the audience. He always gives me bad reviews.

What’s the best piece of advice you could offer to someone looking to do what you’re doing? The advice I have is to keep Going. everything takes time. learn from the awfully nights when you bomb and are to shamed to show your face. also open mics are open mics. It’s ok to fail there.

Show plugs? The 20th I am doing a fundraiser to help homeless queer youth at Hamburger Marys. Every Monday I host the shit show 2050 west division at Shambles Bar! Ya’ll come! And Tuesday nights at Chicago Underground at the Beat Kitchen.
